Liverpool Central Station
Liverpool Central Station is one of the UK’s busiest stations and now handles more passengers than any underground station in the UK outside of London.
Despite this the station has suffered from a succession of piecemeal and low budget ‘refurbishments’ over the last 12 years that have done little to address the stations desperate need to increase platform capacity and unlock this bottle neck in the Merseyrail network.
What CGI Fantasist envisages is the creation of a second island platform to the eastern side of the Northern Line section of the station thereby creating a 4 platform station.
Such a move would offer the opportunity to remove much of the roof covering of the station as part of a wider redevelopment of the station and shopping centre at ground level and allow natural light to once again fill the station box space.
Expanding the station is a long term aspiration of the city’s transport authorities that needs to be brought forward not only to address growing passenger numbers but to also future proof the station for further network expansion including the Edge Hill Spur.
